When it comes to dieting and our bodies...
we think this time will be different. This time I will be strong. But if dieting your way to the body you've always dreamed of were a matter of sheer willpower - or wanting it enough - wouldn't more of us have it? If dieting were the long term solution to optimal health and being at ease in our bodies, most of us would be rockin' our bikinis all over town. Stay with me.
The very nature of dieting sets us up to fail. If everything we eat is determined by a set of rules, then there will always be the temptation to rebel. If we deem foods "good" or "bad", then we attribute judgment to ourselves based on what we eat. And when we think we have "failed", we tend to feel guilt, shame, self-loathing - and many of us end up face-first in the french fries.
So, maybe we need to try something drastic. Something crazy. Like removing the rules in the first place and learning to love our bodies enough to nourish them well. Maybe, if we tune into what our bodies want - and let that be louder than the judgment we apply to it - we won't need to fight so hard anymore.
